Communication is on everyone’s lips. Everyone is talking about it. However, recent surveys showed that lack of communication is the cause of almost 75% of all divorces. The two people who once loved each other so much that they believed in a lifelong partnership, they eventually can’t talk to each other.
There are 3 clear signs of poor communication:
When you accuse each other of negative intentions
When silence spreads
When you withdraw more and more from your life together.
During one of our youth group weekends, there was a conflict between a brother and sister. They were arguing so violently that at one point the young man left the room. I went after him and tried to mediate. Then he replied, “But my sister is lying!” What an insinuation! I was so shocked that almost the entire weekend was canceled. For me it was absolutely unimaginable that you could make such a statement about someone you love. After a few hours they were able to reconcile and everything went back to normal.
But what about us in our partnership? Do we also sometimes accuse our partner of things that are absolutely not okay?
Let’s take jealousy: Jealousy is actually the prime example of insinuation. You insinuate that your partner could imagine being with someone else. You insinuate that he could cheat on you, that he could swap you. That his love is not strong enough when someone else makes eyes at him.
The bad thing about insinuating negative intentions is the lack of trust. No wonder silence spreads. And after all, everyone is just living their lives. Communication is the key to trust, and good communication in the relationship can bring about an incredible amount of closeness between partners.
Because good communication causes
That I feel accepted as I am
That I feel at home with my partner
That we carry each other when there are problems
That we can solve every conflict together
That we are the best team in the world
